X-Joseph Story (September 18, 1779 - September 10, 1845) was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1812 to 1845. At 32 years, 58 days of age at the time of his nomination, he is the yougest person ever appointed to the Court. As a justice he is most remembered for his opinions in Martin v. Hunter's Lessee and United States v. The Amistad. As an author his best-selling Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833) dominated the field in the 19th century. In a number of years his writings likely earned him more than $10,00, more than twice his justice's salary of $4,500. Story's Commentaries were the second (after Rawle's?) comprehensive treatise on the provisions of the U.S. Constitution and remain a critical source of historical information regarding the forming of the American republic and the early defining of its law.
